I hope you all have had a wonderful week of Thanksgiving with those you love! We are now in that special time of year between Thanksgiving and Christmas when the holiday cheer and yearly traditions warm our hearts and our homes. There’s nothing quite like it, and my hope is that in the midst of all the holidays preparations and the fast pace of wrapping up the year behind us, we are all able to truly savor this season and the things that make it so sweet.
Between the twinkling festive lights, keeping the heat on for a cozy interior, and combating the shorter days with more light usage, it is no surprise that winter is often the season that warrants the highest electric bills! Today I want to highlight a few ways to save and conserve energy over these winter months.
- Weatherproof your seals. The biggest way you can keep your energy cost low this winter is by making sure your home is well-sealed! Check around your windows and doors especially to see if you need to replace weather-stripping or re-seal any openings. Also, make sure to close the damper on your fireplace when it’s not in use as this is an easy one to overlook in the winter, and can allow a lot of heat to escape! By sealing your home well, you are allowing your heating system to do its job with just a little less effort.
- Consider a smart thermostat. One great way to conserve energy throughout the year is to invest in a smart thermostat. These will allow you the ability to program your heating system around your schedule. For example, you can set the temperature lower while you are away at work for the day, and then have it bump the heat up again just an hour before you return. Or you can program it to shut off completely while you are away on vacation and then kick on again a day before your return so you are welcomed to a warm home.
- Expose your air vents. Check your air vents! Sometimes, as we arrange furniture and decorate our homes, we may accidentally cover an air vent or inhibit its flow. This will cause your heating system to work in overtime keeping your home heated, so it may be a good idea to do a quick check and make sure all your vents are open and exposed with a clear flow to your room!
- Utilize textiles. Rugs are more than just a way to decorate and add interest to your home! They actually play a key role in insulating your floors and retaining heat, giving your heating system a helping hand. You can even use rugs as wall hangings to not only create a beautiful statement piece, but to add an extra layer of insulation in any season.
- Turn down the thermostat. This may seem like a no-brainer, but one of the best ways to save on your electric bill through the winter months is to simply turn down your thermostat by a few degrees! It may mean adding an extra layer to stay cozy, but can really pay dividends in the long run.
I am wishing you all a wonderful final month of 2025, savoring the joys of this season. I am thankful for you each and the role that you play alongside our team in “unlocking new doors”!
