Hello, friends! I write to you from that place “in between.” In between Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. In between one year and the next. A place of reflection, of new beginnings, of savoring memories made. If you’re like me, the idea of starting fresh with a new year and a new calendar is exciting and life-giving. I love taking this time to reflect on the past year’s highs and lows, the ways I grew and the ways I still want to grow.
As we set our goals and resolutions for the coming year, I want to offer three simple points to consider as our starting point and guide:
- Reflect. The first place we should begin when starting our new year with a plan of action for achieving new goals is to reflect on the year gone by. Which disciplines/daily rituals served you well and deserve a place in your daily routine this year? Which rhythms were life-giving? Which ones were hard to follow through on or be consistent with? These questions can be the springboard to customizing a New Year’s plan of action that will best position you for success.
- Define. Take some time to really think about what your core values are and define them. What is worth pursuing above all else to you? What do you want out of the coming year? And then, what things regularly distract you from pursuing your values? Defining what you value can clarify what your resolutions and priorities should be, allowing you to think more clearly and let those secondary things find their place.
- Narrow your focus. A temptation for all of us is to create aspirations and set goals that sound impressive and hopeful, only to realize woefully a few weeks into the year how unattainable they really were. My advice is to choose no more than two or three new goals for 2026 with a measurable plan of action for each. It’s so much better to be consistent with less lofty goals than to fall off the bandwagon altogether with goals that were just a little too far out of reach.
Here’s to your 2026, friends! May you start the new year in a place of peace and hope, the joy of Christ’s coming fresh in our hearts, as we look at the blank slate to be filled ahead. My team and I look forward to pursuing our 2026 goals alongside you, unlocking countless new doors along the way. Happy New Year to you all!
