In life, there are several different ways that we mark the passing of time and create differentiation from one trend cycle to the next. The colors that are dominate in each given year are undoubtedly one of the most prominent ways to set one year apart from the next, influencing everything from what shade we paint our walls to the color of clothing we choose to wear. In the same way that we associate pastels with the 1950s, burnt orange with the 1970s, and all the gray hues with the 2010s, we are currently setting patterns and making history with our current color palette trends. Let’s take a look at what colors are rising to the top this year — the shades and hues that will make this year distinct from the rest.
“Mocha Mousse” has been named the Pantone color of the year, meaning that it sets the tone for the rest of the color palette that will be utilized among color-driven industries this year. It speaks of warmth, comfort, and indulgence, and the complementing colors often reflect these qualities as well. It evokes a sense of earthiness yet makes a bolder statement than the neutrals we often see at play.
Warm whites are making a reappearance this year, after white taking a bit of a backseat in color trends for a while. We won’t be seeing much stark white this year, but instead a warm, creamy, almost butter-like white that follows the “Mocha Mousse” theme.
We will also be seeing blues and greens that reflect the comfort and warmth of nature showing off this year (think Dill Green and Aura Indigo). The goal is to connect indoor spaces with the natural world right outside our windows, featuring the colors and hues we see there.
When it comes to painting and decorating the interior of your own home, I always think it is best to choose colors you love – whether that follows the year’s trending colors or not! If you happen to love the earthy and natural deep browns, striking greens, and warm whites that 2025 brings with it, I say have fun with featuring these colors in your home! But if those are not your preference, don’t let this year’s color palette dictate your decisions, and choose the colors you know you will love both now and in upcoming years as well. The thing that matters most is that you feel at home and comfortable within the walls of your own home and have created a space that you truly love to be.
