Happy Labor Day, friends! This holiday always feels like summer’s final hurrah as everyone has already begun switching gears into “back-to-school” and preparing for fall. Labor Day is such a welcome and perfectly timed long weekend. A chance to enjoy friends and family and rest from our labors as we celebrate the final days of summer.
Sometimes long weekends can be overtaken with “to-do” lists and catching up on all the things that we don’t get around to in a normal work week. And there’s nothing wrong with that as long as you don’t miss the chance to rest and refresh as well! So here are some ideas I have thought of that can help us really unplug, rest, and celebrate this Labor Day:
- Make your own ice cream. Something that feels so distinctly summer-y, and is a fun project, especially if kids are involved. It can be a little time consuming, which is why it is perfect for a slow holiday. Top with fresh summer fruit for the perfect dessert.
- Read a book. If you’re like me, you have a list of books you want to read through, but there never seems to be the perfect time to brew a cup of coffee and crack open the cover. As an adult, sometimes restful activities like reading just don’t happen unless you intentionally prioritize them!
- Set up camp in the backyard. If you have kids or grandkids, this is a sure way to make some sweet summertime memories! Roast some s’mores over the backyard fire once the cooler evening temperature sets in and pitch a tent to sleep in. You get the memories of camping, but the comforts of home are only a stone’s throw away. We have made the most wonderful memories camping with our grandkids!
- Hit the swimming pool. It’s the best way to wrap up summer. Knowing that pool days are almost over for the summer make these last poolside days of the year even more sweet.
- Pull out the grill. When you think of Labor Day, there’s a good chance you are picturing an all-American cookout. It just fits the holiday so well. This year don’t be afraid to get creative with the grill though! Grilled pizzas, grilled bruschetta, and grilled peaches are some of my favorite ways to switch things up. I’d love to hear some of your favorite less-traditional foods to grill as well!
Regardless of how you choose to celebrate your Labor Day weekend this year, I hope it is restful and refreshing. Sometimes a little break from the routine is just what we need to jump back into work, school, and whatever else the upcoming weeks hold for you with a new enthusiasm. I hope this weekend is just that for you. Happy celebrating!
