When I helped Phil and Emily “unlock new doors” in this house a few years back, I couldn’t wait to see how they would transform it into their home. But they have! I was honored to go visit for myself, and was blown away by the transformation! There is something so energizing about working with a client with vision. And this is exactly what Philip and Emily brought to the table from the very first time they walked through the home. This space has truly been transformed and given new life through this remodel.
Emily wanted a space that was welcoming and inviting – a place where guests and children could all feel welcome. She has been very inspired by the concept of “Hygge” which is a Danish word meaning “cozy living,” and that is exactly what there hard work exudes. With the arched doorways and cozy textiles, it is a home that draws you in from the moment you step inside the door!

To help get the ball rolling and bring her vision to life, Emily connected with a local designer and building contractors who helped provide some excellent input and ideas. Though this process was not always a walk in the park (especially living in the home throughout the remodel and dealing with water outages and intense dust), I was amazed at how the 9 months of hard work and patience have more than paid off. Just look at this gorgeous space! Let’s get into some of the design details.
After

All of the tile, paint, and flooring was done personally by Philip and Emily, with some assistance from family members. Doug Martin was the contracted electrician and Chase Ramseyer also assisted with hanging light fixtures. The original flooring was able to be cleaned and kept, except for the upstairs bathroom, the living room, dining room, and kitchen, where they laid Home Depot’s luxury black peel & stick vinyl flooring. It looked so real – I could hardly believe it was peel & stick!
The main living area was painted with Sherwin William’s “snowbound,” which is the perfect shade of white. It’s clean and bright, without feeling harsh. The upstairs bathroom was painted in “pewter green,” and an accent wall in the master bathroom was painted with “rockwood shutter green.” The nursery got an accent wall in Sherwin William’s “vintage leather.”
Throughout their home, Philip and Emily put in some artistic touches to really personalize the space and take the remodel to the next level – like silver paint and a feather on the kitchen counter and sink to create a marbled look, or the art piece of Emily’s that is hung in the guest bedroom. This talented couple also tackled the kitchen backsplash on their own, after bartering for a wet saw with a Faire Coffee gift card!
The thoughtfulness and craftmanship that has been poured into this space is evident, but Philip and Emily aren’t done just yet. They say their next projects to tackle include landscaping and getting the basement ready for some rambunctious kids.
Philip and Emily, thank you so much for letting me be a part of “unlocking new doors” for your family! It is a joy to see how you have made this space your own, and I am confident that many years of sweet memory-making await within these walls.
