There is so much to love about the changing of seasons. As we shift from one season to the next, it gives us a chance to change up our menu plans, our closets, and our home décor. It causes us to take a moment to catch our breath, reevaluate goals, and embrace all that comes with the new season as we store away the memories from the one that is closing.
And for homeowners, the changing of the seasons is also the perfect time to make sure that we are up to speed on our home cleaning and maintenance! Each season requires different things from our homes, so it is crucial for us to give our houses the TLC they need so they can continue to give back to our families. Today, I want to highlight a few things that should be at the top of your “to-do” list as a homeowner this Fall!
- Check your gutters. Fall is the perfect time to make sure your gutters are clean and functioning properly! Buildup of debris in your gutters can create long term damage when the temperatures start to drop and trapped water freezes. You can stay ahead of the game by having them cleaned and inspected in the fall!
- Maintenance your heating system. Make sure your furnace filters are cleaned and replace them if necessary. Gas heaters should be maintained annually by a professional, but you can clean the exhaust vents yourself. Not only will this ensure a safe fall/winter season for your family, but it can also make a difference in reducing your energy bill!
- Clean your chimneys. There are few things cozier than a rolling fire in the fireplace during these fall and winter months. It’s important to make sure that your chimney has been properly maintained and is ready to warm your home for these colder days ahead.
- Prep your lawn. Give your lawn one final cut, mulch the roots of your trees and shrubs to protect them, drain the water from hoses, and aerate your lawn. A little bit of extra thought and effort can go a long way in preparing your yard to weather the cold well!
- Check your detectors. Carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms are crucial for the safety of your home and loved ones. It’s important to check their batteries and expiration dates regularly, and especially at the onset of the colder months when you will be using heat more heavily in the home.
If you are proactive in these five areas of home maintenance early in the fall season, you will be just that much more free to enjoy the beauty of fall with peace of mind. I wish you all the happiest fall season, full of wonderful memories and cozy moments with those you love ones inside the walls of your homes.
