I hope all of you are soaking in this Fall as much as I am! Those idyllic fall evenings with crisp autumn weather outside, a comforting soup dinner on the stove, and a flickering pumpkin-spiced candle on the table are hard to beat. Nothing paints a picture of “cozy” quite the same way.
As you embrace all the wonder of autumn, this is also a great time to evaluate and make a plan for your home’s maintenance! There are few things more important than maintenance as a homeowner. It is one of the primary ways to protect and improve your home’s value over time. Oftentimes, staying on top of routine home maintenance and taking care of small issues that may arise can save you costly large-scale repairs down the road. Especially in the Fall, home maintenance and winterizing your home is crucial, as freezing temperatures and upcoming winter storms often take the biggest toll on a home’s condition.
Each home’s maintenance needs will vary slightly based on your home’s age, service history, and specific systems and appliances. Below is a checklist of all the various maintenance needs to consider this fall. So, pour yourself a cup of apple cider or coffee and read over this list to consider what your home’s needs might be!
- Seal your driveway.
- Clean your gutters.
- Service and inspect your furnace.
- Prune trees and shrubs.
- Check weatherstripping and caulk around windows and doors.
- Inspect your roof.
- Disconnect and drain exterior hoses.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide monitors.
- Check your attic for mold, moisture, pests, or improper insulation.
- Test your sump pump.
If you check these items off your list, you will be well on your way to winterizing your home and saving yourself time and energy and extensive repairs down the road! Taking just a little time this Fall to make sure your home is getting the care it needs will truly pay off in the long run.
