One skill that I have been wanting to develop more recently is that of romanticizing and leaning into the beauty of everyday life. Our days are spent working our way through to-do lists, managing our homes, solving problems, and caring for those who are dependent on us. Sometimes it is easy to let day after day pass without marveling at the beauty of all of this – the gifts we are given in each day, and the sensory wonders that surround us. So, this fall, that is one challenge I have for myself and for you: to intentionally embrace the beauty found right in front of us.
What better way is there to romanticize this fall season than to take a scenic fall drive or enjoy a leisurely fall-themed day trip in our local area? Below are some of my best suggestions for doing just that in central Illinois over these next few weeks!
Grandview Drive. This famous 2.5 mile drive is a prime way to savor the fall season, leading to an amazing view of the autumn-colored trees surrounding the Illinois River. And, as a bonus part of the experience, you can venture into Peoria Heights for a warming lunch or afternoon coffee pick-me-up after taking in the view!
Illinois River Road. This central segment of the Illinois River Road Scenic Byway gives you a great cross-section of the best views in central Illinois this fall, winding past river towns, gorgeous autumn forest scenes, and bluffs.
Route 26. Throw on your favorite cozy sweater, grab a warm drink to sip on, and take to the road winding along the Illinois River! You will be met with orange-colored tree tunnels and timber ridges, with some great local stops along the way (consider Club Lacon or Duck In if you’re looking for a bite to eat).
Starved Rock State Park. If it’s in the cards to take a daytrip within the next few weeks, Starved Rock is the perfect spot to revel in all the wonders of fall. With over 13 miles of wooded trails, sandstone canyons, and hidden waterfalls waiting to be discovered, you will be glad you made time for this natural local gem.
Wildlife Prairie Park. If you have littles in your life, or anyone who enjoys wildlife and nature, this is a must-go spot in these next few weeks! It is a 2,000 acre zoological park, with native Illinois wildlife on display in their natural habitat. During the fall season, you can even enjoy a hay-rack or train ride through pastures where bison, elk, and deer can be spotted.
Matthiessen State Park. Talk about amazing Fall views and the best hikes – this State Park is only an hour from Peoria!
May these next few weeks of fall be filled with savoring the simple joys and beauties right in front of us, no matter how exceptional or “ordinary” our days may be!
