It’s been said that interior design trends come and go, but good bones are forever. As fun as it is to keep up with current styles for home design, at the end of the day I know that many of us want to make design choices that will stand the test of time. We want our homes to grow with us and be a place of comfort and memory-making without feeling outdated within a year or two. So what are some of these design features that never go out of style, the ones that will provide a timeless backdrop for life in your home?
- Natural materials. You can’t go wrong with natural materials. Think hardwood, stone, brick, and granite. These materials not only provide a beautiful and high-quality functional element for your home, but they also age well and are highly durable.
- Quality built-ins. Intentional storage adds architectural integrity to your home, as well as creating a blank slate that can evolve with you as your aesthetic develops over time. Built-in bookshelves, mudroom cubbies and window seats are great design choices that outlast the ebb and flow of trends while boosting practicality.
- Natural lighting. There is no such thing as too much natural lighting! It improves any room and boosts the ambiance and mood of a home. Natural lighting may seem like a feature so obvious it doesn’t need to be listed here, but anyone who has lived in a poorly-lit space knows the impact of natural lighting. It really can’t be overstated.
- Decorative finishes. Crown molding and wainscoting are great ways to instantly elevate the bones of your space. They create a sense of uniqueness and refinement that lends itself to any style. And they have proven to stand the test of time – they’ve claimed their place in interior design for centuries and are not going anywhere anytime soon!
- Mature landscaping. Thoughtful landscaping is one of the best ways to grace your home with features that will only improve with time. You’ll want to incorporate a blend of ground covers, mid-sized shrubs and bushes, and tall anchoring trees to create a blended and well-balanced landscape for your home. Always choose a layout with the plant’s mature size in mind so as not to overcrowd your space.
These five different areas are a great start in creating a home with features that outlast fads and trends. Homes that embody timeless, quality design are the result of intentional choices and investment in the bones of the home rather than chasing the current style craze. My team and I are cheering you on as you “unlock new doors” and create a space that is just that – a home that exudes beauty and comfort and stands the test of time.
