I always love seeing what my clients do to their new homes after they move in! It takes a vision and a little bit of hardwork to undertake a home remodel, and it’s so fun to see the final product. Often, just a few changes can really transform a space and make it fit the family even more perfectly. Mike and Britta’s kitchen remodel is no exception! They made a few strategic changes and it really opened up the entire space and gave it a whole new look.
BEFORE
When Mike and Britta moved in, they knew they wanted an open layout, with the kitchen connecting directly to the main TV room. They also knew they wanted a view to the front door so it was more inviting when guests entered. So, of course, the first and biggest change was tearing down the interior wall that closed the kitchen off from the living room. They then took some of those cabinets and reinstalled them along the wall with the sink, making great use of their space and creating a much more open feel. It was the perfect solution to give their home the inviting atmosphere they were going for!
The original cabinets in the kitchen were a dark, deep brown with red undertones. Mike and Britta painted their cabinets “Alabaster White” from Sherwin-Williams, and installed new hardware to replace the existing silver knobs. Now, instead of the kitchen being closed off with dark cabinets and pulling the dark browns from the granite, the new soft white has really pulled out the creams from the granite to give the kitchen a bright and spacious feel. It’s amazing how much a simple coat of paint can do!
AFTER
The Kresca’s moved the double ovens and low-lying microwave, and then got rid of six cabinets and three drawers altogether. They moved their coffee bar to the right of the refrigerator, but shortened the granite by 2 feet, and then added the open shelves above. They chose open shelving instead of cabinets, and this added to the open, spacious feel. You would never know by looking at it that it wasn’t the original design of the home, as it looks so natural and flows together seamlessly!
Mike and Britta, thanks so much for allowing me to come and see your kitchen transformation! I am so impressed by your ability to envision and execute your remodel and am confident that this kitchen will be the backdrop to many wonderful memories (and good food!) for your family in the years to come.
