“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone… for to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
As the Christmas season comes to its peak on Christmas Day, I feel anew the joy and the significance of these verses from Isaiah 9!
Just as in the day that Jesus was born, our world aches for light. It aches for rescue, for rest, for restoration. The “deep darkness” spoken of here is very real, and we see it everyday.
But this is Christmas: the light has shone on us! In the birth of Jesus Christ, all of the hopes and longings we carry with us find their fulfillment. Rescue, rest, and restoration have been accomplished for us. Heaven has reached down to earth. Hope has come to find us.
May we rest in Christ, and delight in the life that He brings afresh this Christmas season! There truly is nothing that is more worth celebrating. Our Prince of Peace is born.
I wish all of you the merriest Christmas! May the joy of Christ be yours today.
